Which version should I play today?

You can start at almost any Zelda game. Release order is the order they shipped. Nintendo's history chart is a different list: Skyward Sword, the Minish Cap, Ocarina of Time, and then three alternate futures.

When a later edition exists, that is the one named below. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2, published by Nintendo, releases November 5, 2026. It is a new version of the 1998 game, not a new story. Four Swords, Four Swords Adventures, Tri Force Heroes, Hyrule Warriors, and Cadence of Hyrule are left off both orders.

  • A safe start: Breath of the Wild, then Tears of the Kingdom. Neither one requires the older games.
  • Timeline start: Skyward Sword, the Minish Cap, then Ocarina of Time.
  • Ocarina of Time on Nintendo Switch 2: November 5, 2026. Same story as the Nintendo 64 game.
  • After Ocarina, pick one branch. The hero's defeat, the child era, and the adult era are alternate futures.
  • Left off: Four Swords, Four Swords Adventures, Tri Force Heroes, Hyrule Warriors, and Cadence of Hyrule.

Release order

Japanese debuts, one row per story. Remasters and the Switch 2 editions are the play-today note, not extra rows. Twilight Princess reached North America on Wii on November 19, 2006, before this Japanese date. Spirit Tracks, Skyward Sword, and A Link Between Worlds also reached some other regions first.

FAQ

Should I play Zelda in release order or timeline order?

Either is fine, and most games do not require the one before them. Release order is how they shipped, from the 1986 game through Echoes of Wisdom. Timeline order starts at Skyward Sword. After Ocarina of Time, pick one of the three branches instead of trying to play all three as one sequence.

Is Ocarina of Time on Nintendo Switch 2 a new story?

No. Nintendo's store page lists The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2, releasing November 5, 2026. It is a version of the 1998 Nintendo 64 game. It does not get its own row on either list.

Where do Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom fit?

Play Breath of the Wild first, then Tears of the Kingdom. Nintendo's current public chart shows that pair apart from the defeated, child, and adult branches, so this guide does not assign them to one of those three futures.

Why are Four Swords, Tri Force Heroes, and Hyrule Warriors missing?

This page is the single-player mainline only. Four Swords, Four Swords Adventures, and Tri Force Heroes are multiplayer spin-offs. Hyrule Warriors and Cadence of Hyrule are left off for the same reason. They are not in either order here.

Which version of Link's Awakening, Ocarina of Time, and Skyward Sword should I play?

Link's Awakening on Switch, Skyward Sword HD on Switch, and Ocarina of Time 3D on Nintendo 3DS until the Switch 2 version is out on November 5, 2026. The older Game Boy, Wii, and Nintendo 64 editions are the same stories.
